EXPO

Why should I attend the Expo?

There are many reasons why attending the Expo is extremely beneficial to Online Students. The top three are:

  1. Hands-on instruction, attending on campus classes and other in-person activities can improve your skills dramatically. This will help you to get more out of your Academy of Art University online education and aid in your future success.
  2. Discussing your progress with your studies, your future and career options with your Directors will help tailor and streamline your program and provide depth to your understanding of your chosen field.
  3. During the Expo many attendees experience a wonderful “Ah-ha!” moment. After a few days with us on campus, they understand more about why Academy of Art University online classes are so demanding and how our connections to creative industries can help them make the important transition from student to working professional. They leave the Expo energized and inspired. Most have made new friends and important connections.

Students who attended past Expos outlined additional benefits during this online chat.

FIELD TRIPS
IMPORTANT OVERVIEW
Most of the companies listed for our field trips don’t actually allow field trips. But they do allow their employees to host visitors. Since our alumni work at top firms, most Summer Expo field trips are actually company visits hosted by Academy of Art University alumni.

Field trips aren't designed to be a main function of Expo. They are designed to be a little treat for students attending Expo. They are a reward for students who attend workshops, consult with their Directors and bond with their Schools.

Going to workshops, meeting with Directors and connecting with Schools are what will help students with their studies and their future success in their chosen fields, not field trips. But they certainly are a fun little dessert!

Who gets to go on Expo field trips?

Directors decide whether or not their students will participate in field trips. They also decide which companies are relevant for their students to visit. Some Directors plan for weeklong projects for Expo, so some majors don’t have enough time in their schedules for field trips.

Here is a line up of majors and field trips from past Expos. Please note this list is a combination of all the field trips we have done for in the past four years.

ADV – SF Ad Agency
ANM, ILL – Pixar, DreamWorks, KIXEYE, Madefire, Mars Animation, Disney Museum
ARH – Building Site Tour
COM – Facebook, MediaONE
FA – En Plein Air painting in Golden Gate National Park
FASCU – Artworks Foundry, Lawrence Noble Studio
FSH – Wholesale Showrooms, Screen Printer (Merch, Styling, Journalism, only)
GAM – EA Games, KIXEYE
GR – SF Design Studio
IAD – Facebook, Puccini Group, SF Design Center, HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates
MPT/ACT – Google, YouTube, CBS Interactive
MUS – Pixar, DreamWorks, Madefire, Mars Animation
PH – SF Fine Art Photography Gallery Tour
VIS – Pixar, DreamWorks, Disney Museum
WNM – Google, Facebook, YouTube, Adobe

How are student assigned to field trips?

ANM, ILL, VIS and MUS students get to pick from a short list of field trips options. An email is sent about a week before Expo asking them to list their first three field trips, in order of preference. Students are then slotted in, first come, first serve. In the past, Pixar slots have been fill within an hour of the email being sent.

Field trips for other majors are selected by the Directors of those majors.

Why are there so few slots for each field trip?

Most of the field trips aren’t field trips at all but visits to Academy of Art University Alumni who work for our Industry Partners. Employees of the companies are limited to the number of guests they can host at one time, so the open slots range from 5 – 8.

Can I go on more than one field trip?

General rule of thumb is one field trip per student. But COM, MPT and WNM sometimes schedule multiple field trips for their students.

If I can’t get a slot on a field trip, can I set one up myself?

Most of the field trips aren’t field trips at all but visits to Academy of Art University Alumni who work at our Industry Partners. Unless you are connected to alumni at a company you wish to visit, you probably wouldn’t be able to arrange for a field trip yourself.

Could my field trip get cancelled?

Yes, field trips can be cancelled at any time, including last minute. Companies may have pressing issues pop up or deadlines shift, so they may need to cancel your field trips to attend to running their businesses.
HOTEL INFORMATION

Can you recommend a hotel?

Trip Advisor has a pretty good San Francisco Hotels list.

If I’m staying in a hotel, where should it be located?

If you are unsure whether a hotel in which you are interested, is in a good location, email Melinda Mettler mmettler@academyart.edu and ask her.
