This is the first major letterpress collaboration for The Weekend Press, which was just established in the summer of 2013. Oakland Illustrated has steadily built an audience of supporters via social media—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Kickstarter.
“It’s been an organic approach, tapping into our network in the design community and almost all word-of-mouth promotion,” notes Pham.
Pham found his way back to letterpress printing after working at agencies like MetaDesign. He first fell in love with the craft while taking an elective course in printmaking at the Academy. While studying in the School of Graphic Design, he apprenticed for three years at Painted Tongue Press in Oakland, refining his skills.
The Weekend Press has made it possible for Pham and Pan to return to the tactility and craft of working with paper and ink. The new enterprise they’ve launched in Oakland was spurred by a desire to reconnect with the hands-on component of design. Via the press, the partners can combine their experience in design and production with their passion for printing.
