Students completing the BFA in Art History at Academy of Art University have the opportunity to develop their studio practice while simultaneously gaining an in-depth knowledge of art history. Studio classes make up approximately half of the major curriculum and students will produce a portfolio of work within a specialized area of fine art as well as a senior thesis. Students will develop strong writing, research, analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
As they develop their talents and unique styles, students have many opportunities to network with professionals in the industry and begin their professional futures:
Spring Show – With an exhibition of fresh and original work, Academy of Art University's Spring Show draws crowds of industry professionals each year. Students showcase their best work in their portfolios and interview with representatives.
Awards & Real-World Projects – Academy of Art University students are frequent winners in industry competitions.
Academy of Art University offers several opportunities for students to study abroad during the summer months. Each program emphasizes the art and culture of a particular region. The Liberal Arts department sponsors an annual art history seminar in Europe, which exposes students to the art of featured regions within the broader context of European history and culture. Students explore the extraordinary architectural monuments of the chosen locality while visiting the extensive collections of paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects housed in Europe’s world-renowned museums. Countries visited in the past have included Great Britain, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in programs offered by art and design studio departments such as the School of Fine Art’s intensive program in Corciano, Italy where students take studio courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, and book arts while being fully immersed in the daily life and culture of this community.
