Francesca MacKie grew up in San Francisco and studied Communications at New York University. While in Manhattan, she worked with sculptor Will Ryman and jewelry designer Lisa K. After studying at Academy of Art University online in Honolulu, Hawaii, she returned home to attend Academy of Art University on site, where she served as Class Representative. In 2012, she earned her MFA in Fine Art Sculpture with a focus on Jewelry Design. Her jewelry deals with the tendency of humans to compartmentalize and control nature beyond its limits. The precarious relationship of the jewelry to the body represents the tenuous relationship between human constructions and their natural surroundings. MacKie’s final thesis work won the Director’s Choice Award for the MFA School of Fine Art Sculpture at the Academy’s 2012 Annual Spring Show.
