Jeff Merrill is a representational fine artist and educator. His early professional career started in illustration, where he worked for more than a decade. In 2011, he completed an MFA in Figure Painting from Academy of Art University in San Francisco and is now a visual art professor at BYU-Hawaii. His motivation for painting stems from an interest between the abstract qualities of paint and representational subjects. Focus is placed on balancing disparate technical elements such as thick and thin, transparent and opaque and texture versus no texture. Each painting is an opportunity to explore new ways of reconciling opposites, both visually and conceptually. Merrill is a member of the Oil Painters of America. In 2008, he received the Thanhardt-Burger Corp. Award of Excellence. In 2011, he was awarded first place in the OPA fall online showcase for his painting, “La Enfermera”. His work is regularly accepted into national shows and recently became a signature member of PAPOH (Plein Air Painters of Hawaii). He currently resides in Laíe, Hawaii, with his wife and three children.
