Chrystal Powell makes wearable sculptures one might imagine have been discovered in an archeological dig from a forgotten and historic culture. Intricate copper veins and pieces of hand-cut silver “lace” give surface to cocoon shaped lockets and rings designed to burn sage. Ancient archetypes are re-explored in work that is poetic in form. Metal branches escape the body, and seemingly come alive with birds that escape the chest. Chrystal’s work is rooted in her firm belief that jewelry fulfills roles beyond that of adornment. Using precious metals, natural minerals and otherworldly allusions, she constructs pieces intending to serve the wearer; that function as fashion accoutrements, wearable sculptures and objects of power. Chrystal holds a BFA from Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her work has been exhibited at such venues as SOMArts, Sanchez Art Center, (CA) the Macy's Passport runway show, Femina Potens and Macchiarini Creative Design. Chrystal recently served as a 2-year resident of the Million Fishes Arts Collective in the Mission District of San Francisco and was awarded a residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2007. She is currently working on a body of intricately crafted and seemingly magical containers, while enjoying life with her partner and new baby, River.
