What is Self Assignment?
Once a new applicant for campus housing has completed his or her housing application and has paid the $500.00 deposit the next step is to complete a housing assignment. The housing assignment is the actual building and room the student will live in, and students at the Academy of Art University have the unique privilege to pick exactly where they’ll be living from what is available via the online Self Assignment system.

When does Self Assignment Take Place?
At the end of every academic term current residents in campus housing are offered the opportunity to renew their Housing License Agreement and have first pick for their housing assignment. Once the period for continuing residents to self assign for the coming academic term has passed new applicants get the opportunity to self assign. Since the Housing Department accepts applications up to one year in advance, students who apply early will not get to self assign immediately, but will be emailed link to complete their self assignment online closer to the start of the academic term. This delay is because the Housing Department will not be able to give you an accurate list of what housing assignments are available until we can assess who will not be returning from the previous semester. Traditionally we begin sending the self assignment link to students 1-2 months before the start of the academic term. As the time comes closer to the start of the academic term, later applicants can apply, pay their deposit, and then immediately complete their self assignment.
Why won't the page open/load when I click the link?
The self assignment system is only supported by Internet Explorer (version 8 or better) and Firefox. Unfortunately the system will not work on any browser except Internet Explorer or Firefox; this includes but is not limited to Safari and Google Chrome.

Completing your housing assignment is easy! Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how to complete the process.
Completing the Self Assignment Process
Welcome to the Training Session for Housing Self- Assignment at the Academy of Art University! The information provided is to assist with the room and meal plan selection process.
Before logging in please be sure to disable pop-up blockers on your computer.
After you have successfully logged in with your AAU People Soft ID and password, you can now begin the Self-Assignment n for on campus housing. If you need your log in information, please contact the Student Self Service office at 415-618-6500.
Please read the Housing License Agreement by selecting "Community Policies" and "License Policies" located on the left hand side of the screen.
To begin the Self Assignment process:
Select "Self Assignment" on the left hand side of the screen.
Select "General Room Selection."
This is your "To Do" list for the General Room Selection (GRS) process.
Please select "Continue" at the bottom of the screen.
You will be required to electronically sign the Housing License Agreement (HLA) before continuing on. Please be sure you have read and understand the terms and conditions of this agreement before signing. It is a legally binding agreement.
Please select "Continue" at the bottom of the screen.
You can select one of the buildings provided. Please note that if you do not see your building of choice, you are not eligible to live there for the semester/academic year you are applying for. (During the Summer semester, only one building per category will be shown.)
You may look at the "Room Rates", "Meal Plan Rates", or simply select "Room Search" at the bottom of the page to continue with your selection.
This will provide you with an overview of your selected building. You may select "Back to Building" at the bottom of the page.
You may select from one or more of the drop down menus in order to find an available room.
Select "Continue" or "Back to Buildings" for more options.
You will be presented a list of vacancies for your specific requirements. You may choose "Back to Buildings" to select a different option, or "Back to Room Search" to continue with the building.
You will be presented with the bed spaces available within the selected room.
You may choose to go "Back to Buildings," "Back to Rooms," or "Select Room."
Select the desired bed space for that room.
Confirm your selection and select "Continue".
If you choose to select "Quit," you will be logged out of the process and be required to the start the process from the beginning.
All students must select a Meal Plan option (Platinum, Gold, Bronze, or No Meal Plan). Please keep in mind that Clara Gill Stephens requires all residents to have a meal plan. (The Meal Plan is optional during the Summer semester)
You may select "Meal Plan Information" located under the time for find out more information about the meal plans.
Select Confirm to book your room and meal plan.
