Acclaimed Paris Exhibition Features Academy Fine Art Director
 Mark Tennant, renowned artist and Academy of Art University’s Director of the Graduate
School of Fine Art Painting, recently had his first work
exhibited in the internationally esteemed Salon d’Automne in Paris. A highly sought after
annual juried exhibit, the first Salon d’Automne was organized by Georges Rouault, André Derain,
Henri Matisse, and Albert Marquet in 1903. Since its inception, the Salon d’Automne has
showcased dramatic artistic evolutions of painting and sculpture, from fauvism to cubism,
throughout the 20th century. Over the years, the exhibition has presented works in their
first public viewing by Georges Braque, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse,
Amedeo Modigliani, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Pablo Picasso.
Tennant’s accepted work, Jeune Fille, showcases influences of French paintings from the first
half of the 19th century. The French Realist and Romanticist genres, including the work of
Jean-Désirée-Gustave Courbet, Jean François Millet, and Eugène Delacroix have had a profound
inspiration on his thirty-year artistic career. Tennant particularly admires their artistic
legacy because “it seems to be modern, and maintains principles of correct drawing and value.”
Tennant first came to the Academy of Art University as School of Fine Art instructor in
1998. A BFA graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA graduate of the New
York Academy, Tenant has also studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and the
Art Students League in New York. In addition to teaching at AAU, Tennant has taught in Paris
at the Atelier de Carrousel and Académie Julian, as well as the Grand Central Academy, the New York
Academy, and the National Academy of Design School in New York. As the Graduate Director of
the Academy of Art University’s School of Fine Art Painting, Tennant continues to inspire students
to push the boundaries of their technique and artistry to new heights. Tennant’s masterful
paintings and drawings are represented by Park Gallery in Carmel, CA; Carlisle Gallery in Auburn,
AL; and Galerie DDG in Paris.
