» Academy Graduate Captures Distinguished IIDA Scholarship Award - Academy of Art University Interior Design School graduate Tanvi Shah was recently awarded a 2009 Scholarship Award from the Northern California (NC) Chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). Tanvi was presented the award last week during IIDA-NC's Pioneers in Design + Honor Awards ceremony at the newly renovated Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif. Tanvi was one of three interior architecture students honored at the ceremony. A native of India, she chose to earn her Masters degree at Academy of Art University, one of the top interior design schools in the nation, to familiarize herself with U.S. styles and standards. It became her passion to create a thesis project that brought the flavor and culture of India to San Francisco. Dubbed "Spice Village," the project spoke directly to the IIDA competition topic - "Blurring Boundaries." The art school's Director of Interior Architecture and Design Marlene Farrell believed Tanvi's thesis was perfect for the competition and encouraged her to enter. PRWeb – April 2, 2009

The collection features a captivating selection of artworks by these two talented Korean artists. Korean artist H. Jinny Jung uses color, shape and line to create fluid layers evocative of the traces that moving points of light make in long photographic exposures and rippling, diaphanous surfaces. Her paintings are vibrant explorations of the psychology of the inner mind. Jung states, "My work does not attempt to describe something, but rather to give expression to inner feeling." » Design for social praxis: what's your soft spot? - What's your soft spot?  What concepts, events, and injustices strike a nerve so much that it prompts action? What gets you riled up?  "What the #$%& is social design"? These are the questions that Academy of Art University MFA students, Ashley Cieka and Mike Jeter address the public in their exhibition, What the *#&! is Social Design? Art and design has long been associated with social change--in this exhibition, Cieka and Jeter examine how contemporary artists and designers recruit their visions to facilitate change in today's world. Given the ease and effectiveness with which visuals penetrate our consciousness (often without our knowledge), it is easy to undermine the power images wield on our psyches and subsequently, our actions.  We've all witnessed the ways the power of images have been abused (for example, by governments, individuals in power, advertising), leaving us to wonder how and in what ways this power can be channeled into social progress.  Through this exhibition, their publication, and their growing network of artists, thinkers, and writers, Cieka and Jeter hope to establish a platform for designers to address contemporary issues, engage viewers, and foster a "higher quality of life." » Mercy, Mercy: Jacks and Knights exchange knockouts - The Humboldt State women's softball team gave up early leads to Academy of Art University in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, and home runs saved, then sank, the home team. The Lady Jacks (10-4), the defending NCAA Division II national champions, won the opener 10-2 in five innings via the eight-runs ahead (aka mercy) rule, then the Urban Knights (6-14) returned the favor with their own five-inning 11-3 victory. The win is undoubtedly AAU's biggest, because this is the program's first year playing collegiate softball. In their upset, the Urban Knights struck quickly in the top of the first.
