Academy MFA Grad Thirasak Tanapatanakul Takes Gold at Malaysia's MC2 Advertising Awards
The Academy of Art University is proud to announce that Advertising MFA graduate Thirasak
Tanapatanakul is making waves in the international advertising community. His ad campaign for
Tamiya was the most awarded print campaign in the world for 2005, and he recently received a gold
medal at Malaysia's MC2 Advertising Awards for his hilarious campaign for Bangkok Insurance.
Mr. Tanapatanakul received the award on behalf of his team at Creative Juice\G1. Thirasak is
currently the Executive Creative Director of this up-and-coming creative firm. Since joining
Creative Juice, the firm has been awarded one gold and one silver at the Cannes Lions Awards, two
silvers and one bronze at the Clio Awards, and a variety of other prestigious awards.
Prior to working at Creative Juice, Thirasak was involved in a number of award-winning campaigns
for Y&R in San Francisco, Ogilvy & Mather, and BBDO Bangkok. We spoke to Thirasak about his
well-praised work, his time at the Academy, and his plans for the future:
Why did you choose to attend the Academy?
Well, what can I say? First of all, I fell in love with the city of San Francisco when I saw a
picture of it back in Thailand. Additionally, a good friend of mine was an Academy graduate and she
recommended the school, so I sent my portfolio to the school. The rest is history.
How did the Academy help you?
In a number of ways. The Academy not only taught me advertising design, but also gave me
confidence in myself.
The relationship between students and instructors was especially valuable. The instructors never
stop trying to help you improve. In Melinda Mettler's class I had a 'C' grade at midterm and
finished the class with an 'A'. And after the class was over, she helped me get a job with Y&R
in San Francisco!
You are an executive creative with Creative Juice\G1, a highly decorated ad company in
Thailand. Can you speak about your relationship with Creative Juice?
Creative Juice\G1 started in 2001. Since I joined Creative Juice\G1 in 2004, I've helped improve
the already high reputation of the agency. The agency is currently the seventh highest ranked
agency in the world, according to the Gunn Report and Shots Grand Prix 2005, and was described as
the number one most awarded agency in the Asia Pacific by Asia Pacific AdFest 2005. And all of this
happened in a very short period of time.
I am especially proud of our "Tamiya" Model Kits campaign, which was described as the most
awarded print campaign in the world in 2005 by the Gunn Report and Shots Grand Prix 2005.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to keep producing more good work. Once you've taken a ride on the Lion's back, you just
can't get off!
