Academy Student Creates Newest Addition at SF Zoo
Soul Connection is the newest addition to the San Francisco Zoo’s sculpture collection. Created by Academy of Art University student Van Hong Nguyen, the work was unveiled November 21, 2013 in the zoo’s entry plaza. “This sculpture explores ideas of unity and connection,” says the artist. “It is a space that encourages peaceful possibilities.”
Van Hong is a MFA student in the Academy’s School of Fine Art. She conceived and fabricated the work as part of a project in instructor Peter Schifrin’s Maquette to Monument class. The work joins a number of other sculptures contributed by Academy students on the zoo’s grounds, all part of an ongoing partnership between the zoo and the university.
Born in Vietnam, Van Hong emigrated to the U.S. with her family at the end of the Vietnam War. Although she originally enrolled in the Academy as an online student, Van Hong decided to study onsite to complete her MFA in Fine Art Sculpture.
