Eleven Academy of Art University fashion design graduates showcased their impressive collections in the main tent at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The fresh and creative designs of the next generation of world-class fashion designers are already garnering praise and generating media buzz from the fashion community.

The student designers demonstrated an extraordinary range of technique and skill. South Korean designer Jiyoon Lydia Yeom’s collection of knitwear showcased huge flower prints on a range of different dresses. Fashion designer James Yoest collaborated with textile designer Chia-yu Yeh to create a sustainable collection made with organic and reused fabrics and natural dyes. Andrea Vence’s bold textile prints of magnified images of woven baskets caught the eye of attendees, while Tara Shannahan’s clean white linen collection experimented with structure. Haa Cheng Thai wowed the audience with her laser cut garments that looked like wearable origami.

The diversity in design reflected on the students’ unique sources of inspiration. Kenneth Ning, showing the only menswear collection, founded his concept on the champion Italian soccer team, Forza Azzurri. Yi-Ting “Maxim” Lee based his designs on the Hironiko Araki manga Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, resulting in brightly colored patchwork dresses and jackets paired with metallic leggings. Textile designer Kyung Min Kim took inspiration from her childhood fairytales, while Kathryn Scully’s swimwear collection was reminiscent of her family vacations on the East Coast.  MinSun Lee looked to Russian nesting dolls for her collection. Models wearing polka dots, stripes, knitted helmets and dresses strutted down the runway, bringing the exciting show to a close and leaving a memorable impression on attendees.

The Academy of Art University graduates proved that they can hold their ground among the top designers in the world and gave viewers an exciting glimpse into the future of fashion design.
