Recognizing Emerging Talent – Just the Start
Marisela Gonzales’ accomplishments as a School of Fashion
graduate from Academy of Art University might be numerous, but she knows better than most that the first step towards success means believing in your dreams enough to follow them. Through highlighting her successes, we find her to be proof that when you commit to your dreams, they can become reality.
Marisela was a student at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) with a specialization in Latin studies, preparing for a career as a lawyer and legal representative for her community.
Both of Marisela’s parents went from working in the fields of Central California to becoming graduates of the University, and were able to offer a better future for their daughter. Marisela felt that studying law might build upon the tradition of hard work and contribute to her community, but in her heart she always knew she wanted to be a fashion designer.
In 2008, she decided to pursue her passion. She transferred from UCSC to the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, which changed her life dramatically. Marisela said, "Latinos don't believe that careers in the arts or in fashion are possible." Her determination paid-off when she graduated in 2012 with a BFA in Fashion in Womenswear and Textile design. She was one of only two students to graduate with a double major and she has won numerous awards along the way.
The first event Marisela participated in was the Annual St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Discarded Divine Charity Auction in 2010. At this event, Bay Area designers and students created home goods, accessories and clothing made from recycled materials. Marisela created a beautiful designer handbag and pillow, in which some of the proceeds went towards funding one of San Francisco’s major human service organizations. Her designs helped to assist the most fragile people in our community - those suffering from homelessness, poverty, domestic violence and addiction.
This year, Marisela was one of the five Academy of Art University Fashion students to win a $5,000 scholarship from the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund Contest for her business proposal and design submission. Marisela was then recognized as an EmergingTalent in Stylesight Spring/Summer 2013 Print and Graphic Contest for her work in their international print competition. Marisela was fortunate to also receive an accessory design internship at Kenneth Cole Productions in New York. When she finished her internship at Kenneth Cole, Marisela moved from New York to France thanks to winning an Exchange Scholarship to Paris. She completed a year of study at Academy of Art University’s sister school Studio Berçot, in Paris, allowing her to showcase her talents and training that she received at Academy of Art University.
Despite all of Marisela’s awards and accomplishments, she is convinced that this is just the beginning of her fashion career. Marisela said, "Academy of Art University has made my dreams a reality."
We will continue to follow this alum and her successful fashion career.
