School of Fashion Graduate Wins Grand Prize in designext Competition
Congratulations to the School of Fashion textile design graduate Hye Jung In for winning the Grand Prize of the 27th SURTEX International Student Design Competition: designext.
SURTEX is the only show in North America solely devoted to selling and licensing original art and design for all types of products. It draws hundreds of designers from around the world and gives them the opportunity to market their collections to manufacturers of products for home, contract, stationery, giftware, toys, publishing and more. The SURTEX designext competition honors outstanding art and design students for their exceptional surface design work. Students and their work get exposed to thousands of worldwide industry professionals.
Encouraged to take into account the latest trends and alternatives for a healthy life in fitness and wellness centers, students were tasked to develop designs that would be used on indoor or outdoor furnishings, decorative accessories, apparel, wall coverings, floor coverings and lighting of their choice.
Hye Jung was challenged to create a collection of six original surface designs that would be appropriate for a wellness or healthcare environment. She used imagery of Marrakesh, Morocco gleaned from travel photos of the northwest African city. Hye Jung mainly focused on geometric shapes, bright colors and the roots of Marrakesh that would be appealing and inspiring to younger patrons. The judges noted her sensitivity to surface, pattern and design for the global market in her submission and her portfolio.
As the Grand Prize winner, Hye Jung received a $1000 cash award and a golden opportunity to accelerate her professional career.
“The design world welcomes the creativity of the students in the designext competition, and values their drive to succeed. At SURTEX, designers, agents, manufacturers and retailers are introduced to these talented newcomers,” said the SURTEX judges. “We are excited to see the great work that Hye Jung In and the other winners brought to SURTEX; they all have massive potential to become outstanding artists in the field.”
