Students Participate in Samsung Global Project

The Academy of Art University is one of three internationally-renowned top art schools invited by Samsung to particpate in the Samsung Global Sponsored Project. Each year Samsung invites several schools from all over the world to participate in the project. This year, the School of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University was invited, along with Chiba University (Japan), and Konstfack University (Sweden).

Academy students worked with Samsung Design Membership (SDM), comprised of 50 top students selected from various schools all over Korea. The assignment was "Self Expressism." The students were divided into Local Design Project (LDP) and Global Design Project (GDP) teams. The participants from the Academy were as follows; LDP: Beau Oyler, Yuji Ikeda, Max Sims, Nichole Towler, GDP: Anneli Eriksson, Kalpita Korgaonker, Sean Lim, and Fei-Lang Tseng in conjunction with SDM students: You-Jin Im, Gina Kim, Ji-Wang Kim, Kyoung-Tae Kim, and Kyung-Jun Kim. LDP Students worked individually to create product proposal for San Francisco/Bay Area, and GDP students worked with SDM students to create product proposal for Korean market based on research data accrued by SDM students.

The project began in March, 2004 and ended with a final presentation and exhibition at the Samsung Art and Design Institute Space Gallery in Seoul, Korea from 23rd through 31st of August. The students' design proposals were reviewed by Samsung executives, designers, and professors from local design schools. Student representatives, Sean Lim and Max Sims, were interviewed by some of the executives and designers.

We are grateful to Samsung for providing financial support, invaluable experience and an opportunity for our students to work with students on the other side of the globe.
