Academy Student's Assignment Gets a Blitz of Recognition
For Matt Ware’s final editing class assignment at Academy of Art University this Spring, he was required to edit a two-to-five minute film. For his film, the School of Motion Pictures & Television student chose a subject whose story provided many elements often found in great cinema: conflict, struggle and the type of soaring triumph that has everyone trading their popcorn for Kleenex. Yes, Matt’s film focused on the San Francisco 49er’s quarterback Alex Smith. The Academy student is a diehard Niners fan and has taken his twenty-six minute film — (“I got kind of carried away,” he said) — from the classroom, where he earned an “A”, to the Internet, where the film has received more than 33,000 views. Among those who have given his film a click is Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, who said, via Twitter, that it inspired tears. “I’d like to tell meaningful stories that are emotionally rich,” said Matt. He’s hoping Smith’s athletic performance in 2012 inspires a sequel.
