Industry Professionals Scout Fresh Talent at Spring Show 2007
Some of the biggest players in the creative world come together every year for the Academy of
Art University’s Annual Spring Show to scout talent and give advice to graduating seniors. This
year the Academy hosted more than 200 executives from a multitude of companies, including Disney,
Pixar, DreamWorks, General Motors, ILM, Kodak, Nickelodeon, BMW, Mercedes Benz, MTV, CNN,
Electronic Arts, McCann-Ericksen, Olgivy-Mather, BBDO, Insomniac Games, Sony, Activision, Warner
Brothers, Mazda, and Nissan – all gathered by the Academy to showcase student work and to help
graduating seniors make contacts and hear about job opportunities.
The Academy flew in the industry execs on private jets and treated them to an early morning
breakfast before heading to the show space at 6th and Brannan.
Students lined up and anxiously awaited the opportunity to meet with the industry pros to get
feedback on their portfolios and to ask career advice.
Some students got more than that. American Greetings hired one student for a freelance
project on the spot, and local ad agency Burder Engle set up interviews with several Advertising
students. Art Repola, Executive VP of Visual Effects and Production for the Walt Disney Motion
Pictures Group, purchased Animation student Robin Walton's Mick Jagger painting the day of the
event.
After a complimentary lunch, participants mingled and perused the art on display.
Later in the afternoon, attendees gathered in the atrium for a special reception to honor
distinguished guests. Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of the Academy of Art University, praised
Honorary Doctorate recipients Bill Russell, Jim Brown, and Dan McCaw, and Alumni of Distinction
recipients Will Mosgrove and Gioi Tran as she presented them with their awards. Dr. Stephens said
that the Academy is committed to providing students with this wonderful outlet to show their work
and make industry connections.
The building was packed with a dynamic range of art and design. The beautiful classic art
sculptures and paintings from Fine Art shared space with Industrial Design’s futuristic car
prototypes. Intricately detailed Interior Architecture & Design concepts were displayed near
computer stations with interactive Computer Arts & New Media projects. It was a great showcase
for the passion and creativity of the Academy students thanks to their training and support at
Academy of Art University.
Industry execs were thoroughly impressed with the quality and diversity of the student work.
Hear what some of the execs were saying about this year’s show:
Conrad Montgomery, Recruitment Coordinator with Walt Disney Television Animation said, “We
were very impressed with the high-quality level of work and are looking forward to following up
with how we can utilize these amazing people.”
Hoang Nguyen, Art Director for Namco Bandai Games America Inc. said, “We were blown away by
the sheer amount of talent coming out of the school. We have many potential candidates, and will be
in touch with them soon.”
Tim Jacobsen of Encore VFX said, “Excellent work by students - I felt they were technically
advanced compared to many other students we see.”
