Academy of Art University Students Win Awards at the Prestigious Space-Time Competition at SIGGRAPH 2007
Academy of
Art University students triumphed at the SIGGRAPH 2007 Space-Time Student Competition &
Exhibition. Out of a record number of entries, Kyle Yugawa won first place for his project Verve,
while Molly Quan took home one of the four Honorable Mentions for her project Hidden Symbols in
Chinese Life and Thought, both in the interactive division. This is the fourth year in a row that
an Academy of Art University Graduate New Media student has taken a first-place title at the
Space-Time Competition.
Verve, Kyle’s MFA thesis, is a web tool that lets artists and musicians compose, orchestrate,
and illustrate using sound, shape, and motion. According to the Verve website, the project “strives
to mold techniques of painting/illustration, music, and kinetic performance into a single fluid
process.”
Kyle found out about the competition through Lourdes Livingston, Director of Graduate School
of Computer Arts: New Media.
“I think that its great that she encourages students to enter their work into these
competitions because it helps to give the students and the school the recognition it
deserves,” he said.
The project developed from his frustration as a new media designer to have to learn so many
different applications and processes. He wanted an application that could do it all: motion design,
visual design and musical composition. After a long road of research, preparation and construction,
the award-winning Verve was completed.
“SIGGRAPH is an international event with so many innovative projects being displayed, I was
quite surprised and pleased to hear the news. It is great motivation to keep developing the project
further,” Kyle said.
Space-Time is an internationally juried competition for students within SIGGRAPH 2007, a
conference and exhibition on computer graphics. The competition showcases the state of artistic
computer-based student work in the categories of print, animation, and interactive works.
Kyle's project, Verve, will be showcased at the SIGGRAPH conference from August 5 to August 9 in
San Diego.
