Academy of Art University & URTA Partner in San Francisco Auditions
The mission of the University Resident Theatre Association (URTA) is to support excellence in the professional training of theater artists. To support that mission and to match students with an MFA program that best suits their needs, Academy of Art University and URTA are teaming up to host auditions for master’s programs in the arts of the theater. URTA auditions take place every year, bringing faculty from several top training programs to audition and interview prospective MFA candidates in acting, design and technology, directing, stage management and production/theater management. Forty URTA member universities participate in these auditions, along with prominent institutions and international schools, providing exposure and opportunities to prospective students. MFA scholarships are available for qualified/standout candidates. Please inquire about these opportunities with our School of Acting Directors during your audition.
Everyone Benefits With URTA
Attending schools benefit by having hundreds of candidates from all over the country brought to them in three locations over the course of a few days.
Production companies benefit as they seek to fill openings for professional summer employment or apprenticeships.
Undergraduate students benefit from URTA’s philanthropic Sneak Peek program, which provides them opportunities to understand the graduate recruitment process…so they have firsthand knowledge of how to prepare for the experience.
Prospective graduate students benefit by getting to explore all of the participating schools in one place, in addition to other opportunities that may occur—for example, production companies looking to hire.

Why Consider an MFA in Theater Arts?
An MFA provides aspiring actors, directors, stage managers, production designers and other theater professionals a dedicated period of intense study to focus exclusively on their craft. MFA students receive comprehensive training in their areas of study, learn from working professionals who can help develop their talents, and cultivate an expert demo reel for use in the “reel” world to obtain acting jobs. And according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, acting employment is expected to rise 13% by 2018.
