As students progress, they learn specialized aspects of design such as monetization, unique control types, rapid development via iteration, and production methods working in teams. Students graduate with a solid grasp of the fundamental game art principles, including knowledge of game engine technology and pre-production and production environments.

Environment Concept Art

Environment Concept Art

Environment Concept Art is one of the most important areas of pre-production artwork for a game. Environment concept art serves an extremely important role in setting the mood, feeling, time period, and location of the game. Even if a sequel to a game is being made, and there are many character and prop assets that can be repurposed, there is still a need to create all new environments. A concept artist will work from a brief detailing as much information about the environment as possible. From there, the designer must gather reference and inspiration from any available source (Television, Movies, Other games, photographs, etc.) and compile them into reference boards. The artist then uses that inspiration to create thumbnails and rough sketches to develop the style, color pallet, mood, and physical attributes of the environment. Once a direction is settled on, the artist then creates a full color rendering of the environment. Once the orthographic drawings are complete the model pack is ready to be handed to a 3D environment modeler.

3D Character Modeling

3D Character Modeling

3D Character Modelers are responsible for modeling characters and creatures in the computer, as well as accessories like armor, weapons, etc. 3D Artists are proficient in both modeling and texturing in Maya. Texture Artists create textures for characters, environments, weapons, and props while maintaining the cohesive style of a game. Texture Artists use various modeling and texturing tools 3DstudioMax, Maya, Modo, Zbrush well as various game engines to set new standard for artistic excellence by collaborating and delivering excellent texture assets while working on various projects within a studio.

Character Concept Art

Character Concept Art focuses on designing all of the characters in a video game. Typically a concept artist is given a character write-up detailing all of the physical attributes and personality traits of the character. From there, the character designer must gather reference and inspiration from any available source (Television, Movies, Other games, photographs, etc.) and compile them into reference boards. Once that is complete, the designer uses that inspiration to create thumbnails and rough sketches to develop the style, color pallet, costume, body type and facial features for the character. After creating many iterations of the character and costume design, the artist then does a final pass that will be painted in full color. Once the orthographic drawings of the character are complete the model pack for the character is ready to be handed off to a 3D character modeler.

Game Design

Game Design

Game Design describes the creation of the content and rules of a video game.  The goal of this process for the game designer is to provide players with the opportunity to make meaningful decisions in relation to playing the game.  Elements of video game design such as the establishment of fundamental gameplay rules provide a framework within which players will operate, while the addition of narrative structures provide players with a reason to care about playing the game.

UI/UX Design

UI/UX Design

UI & UX Design covers basic graphic design, layout, developing wireframes, designing mockups, and creating prototypes for usability testing. UI (User Interface) is everything designed into an information device with which people interact such as display screen, app icons, and buttons. UX (User Experience) covers all aspects of the person’s experience with any interface including; graphics, interface, & physical interaction.

3D Environment Modeling

In any game related narrative, the player is heavily influenced by the game environment.  Artists who create environments and props have the ability to influence the player’s game experience through composition, style, lighting, silhouette, prop modeling, prop placement, color, texture, and shader effects.  Proper and consistent implementation of these skills can help make a game environment compelling and rewarding.
