Academy Web Design New Media Student Hired in 8 Hours

“Within 8 hours of posting my video, Recology found it and contacted me,” said Jessie Killops, an Academy of Art University student pursuing a degree from the School of Web Design & New Media. Recology is a well-known waste management company in the Bay Area.

Last semester, Jessie took Visual Design and Typography 3 with instructor Greg Mar. For their final projects, students had to choose a company to do a rebrand and wayfinding campaign on. “I chose Recology,” said Jessie. The assigned project included strategy and marketing, a few print pieces, a web homepage, a mobile app, a video and a logo. “When Recology contacted me, they had seen the video and loved it,” said Jessie. “They asked if they could hire me and make some edits to the video to encompass all their programs and policies, but wanted to keep the same style and format of the video.”

When presented with this project, Jessie was excited to have the opportunity to add something to her portfolio that she is passionate about. “I grew up recycling and we composted in our backyard,” said Jessie. “To me, this stuff is second nature. It’s amazing that a big city like San Francisco has a program that allows everyone to compost, but many people do not know how or why composting is important.” Jessie wanted to make composting easy to understand so that people could do it without thinking. “This is what motivated my project,” said Jessie.

Since many are not interested in thinking or talking about garbage, it was important to make this project visually interesting and keep the message clear. “The video was a great way to do this. It’s short and easy to understand, and it helps the viewer visualize how effective the programs at Recology are and how easy it is to do your part,” said Jessie.

Academy instructor Mar required his class to incorporate the concept of wayfinding into a rebrand campaign. This basically means helping users or customers to move through a space or experience with ease. “In my project, the markers were mostly visual markers. It involved creating a color coded system for the bins, clear icons, repetition and consistency though all assets of the campaign,” Jessie said. “I have instructor Mar to thank for the project’s success.”

For Jessie, Greg Mar has been the most influential instructor at the Academy of Art University. “Our program has lots of great teachers, but for me, the classes I've had with Greg Mar have stood out above the rest. He is extremely knowledgeable and professional and pushes students to a whole new level,” said Jessie. “He really cares about his students' success and goes above and beyond to help us do our best.”
