Hard to Be.better than Graphic Design Grads
Finding a way to Be.better wasn’t a problem for a talented team from Academy of Art University’s School of Graphic Design. First place, student category, in The Dieline Package Design Awards 2013 was awarded to Cecelia Hedin, Cassia The and Nadia Izazi for their rebranding of the Be.better over-the-counter health and home products. All of the first-place team members are 2013 BFA graduates.
The Dieline Package Design Awards 2013 was presented by Inwork at The Dieline Package Design Conference, held in conjunction with HOW Design Live at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
The Dieline Package Design Awards is a worldwide competition devoted exclusively to the art of brand packaging. The 2013 competition received over 1100 entries from 61 countries around the world.
The Academy’s students’ first place project was developed for instructor Michael Osborne’s Packaging 4 class. “The assignment was to rebrand Walgreens, including a store brand and several standalone category brands,” said Osborne. The teams, he explained, are responsible for naming and brand package design. “Each team usually presents between 50 and 70 SKUs, so the Be.better brand is a very small part of this team’s work.”
In addition to naming, the team was responsible for logo design, a color-coded information system and custom-made structures. “Pretty proud of these guys,” said Osborne. On presentation night, he reported, the four teams in his class “filled the room with over 200 SKUs, fully comped, representing several dozen category brands.”
