Mayor Ed Lee Helps Present Academy of Art University Mural

Fifteen weeks ago, 56 Mason Street in San Francisco, California, boasted a blank cement wall. It now shows an image of the early 20th Century featuring the fabulous night life, music, clothing, and even flirting— depicted in a mural created by Academy of Art University students. Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisor Jane Kim, President of Academy of Art University Dr. Elisa Stephens and Uptown Tenderloin Director Randy Shaw joined forces to celebrate the vibrant historical moment of unveiling the mural, now visible to everyone who walks past Eddy and Mason. Mayor Lee noted that it is “important to remember the fun depicted in this image,” which paints a lively picture of the Tenderloin and that art in public spaces can be vital to a community’s health and to culture on the streets, as well as economic development.
