School of Advertising Alum’s Music Making Waves
“Head in the Dirt” (Innovative Leisure), the new album by Academy of Art University alum Hanni El Khatib, bristles with gritty, fuzz-heavy, straight-to-the-point rock played with efficiency and down-market flair. This School of Advertising alum’s music may be more familiar to rock fans than they realize: “Can’t Win ‘Em All,” a track from “Head in the Dirt,” appeared in an Audi commercial that premiered during the Super Bowl. Snippets of three tracks from his 2011 debut album, “Will the Guns Come Out,” were featured in television ads, most notably “You Rascal You,” which ushers in naughty pirates in a spot for Captain Morgan spiced rum. When he’s not playing music, he is the Art Director for, and part owner of, the record label Innovative Leisure. “Just recently, I was at a show and I was sitting around talking to musicians. And I thought: This is what I do. It’s not a pipe dream. I’m a musician,” said the Academy alum.
