School of Fine Art is Carving Tahoe

Last weekend at Northstar ski resort in Truckee, California, the weather was beautiful, sunny and around zero degrees Celsius. For eight teams of snow carvers from around the world, though, it was terrible - the melty snow is sloppy, hard to carve and even dangerous. Lawrence Noble, Chair of the School of Fine Art at Academy of Art University, was enlisted to help choose modern, complex, realist designs for the Carve Tahoe, a five-day snow carving competition to hew works of art from four-meter-high, 18-ton blocks of snow. The Academy Chair wanted no artsy, kitschy snowmen and the designs were spectacular.
