Visual Effects Boom

When a gnarly troll looms over actor Kristen Stewart in the recent blockbuster Snow White and the Huntsman, Vancouver-based Academy of Art University School of Animation & Visual Effects grad Praveen Mathew feels an extra frisson of excitement with the scene. Praveen is a Visual Effects artist in this midst of a Visual Effects boom. "This job lets me do completely fantastical and unreal things," says Praveen. “As film companies continue to invest in big-budget visual effects movies, more than a dozen studios have set up in B.C. in the last two years to do this type of work,” says Nancy Mott, creative digital-media specialist at the Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC). "It's critical because it's currently the only growth sector in the film and television industry," she says. It's a point not lost on the Academy grad. "Every special effects and post-production studio seems to be coming here," Praveen says. "There's a lot of really fun work being done. It's never the same thing twice."
