VOTE NOW! Advertising School Duo Finalists for Kia Print Ad Contest

Johanna Granlund and Amanda Wennberg, BFA students from the Academy of Art’s School of Advertising, have been chosen as finalists for Kia's print ad contest. The coveted grand prize: a trip to the 2019 Cannes Festival in Paris, $10,000 cash prize for tuition, and another $5,000 for their advertising school program.

Matthew Sweeney

Matthew Sweeney received his Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Vermont, where he also earned a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, Political Science, and German. His teaching career has spanned a variety of educational environments, including public, charter, and alternative middle and high schools in Vermont and California, where he taught art with a particular interest in utilizing the arts to empower at-risk youth and students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. Since joining the faculty of Academy of Art University in 2006, he has also supported students as an Academic Coach and has taught in the School of Art Education since the program began.

The arc of Yaryna Zhuk’s career shows what can be accomplished when talent, discipline, patience and hard work meet the right education. Zhuk, who earns her MFA in Academy of Art University’s School of Fashion in December 2019, was not a newcomer to the fashion world when she arrived in the U.S. But she came to Academy of Art University to learn something specifically different— the fashion industry. Her determination has led her to a runway showing at New York Fashion Week.

New Alum Showcases ‘Fleeting’ Moments in First Solo Photography Exhibition

For her first solo exhibition, Aimee Youm, a recent Academy of Art University School of Photography graduate focused on the concept of seizing fleeting moments with a shutter click. Her show focused on capturing everyday moments that are “fleeting.” And she took that word for the title of her exhibition at the university’s 625 Sutter Gallery in April.

Derek Flood received his BFA in Painting from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has also had intensive training at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago where he focused on classical and computer animation. He has over 10 years of experience in character animation, directing, and photorealistic lighting/texturing.

Aaron Aikman Adds to ‘Planet of the Apes’

In 2011, Aaron Aikman was in the audience viewing 20th Century Fox’s revival of the beloved Planet of the Apes series. Just five years later, this School of Game Development graduate and former basketball player found himself as HALON Entertainment’s lead engine artist working on the trilogy’s final installment, War for the Planet of the Apes.

Bradley Hughes has over 23 years of experience in sound design and music production as a composer, saxophonist, and recording engineer for a wide variety of production environments. He has provided music and sound services to clients including Dreamworks, The Hollywood Edge, Creativity Studios, and 13th Generation Productions. Prior to moving to the Bay Area, Brad spent a decade in Los Angeles as a studio musician on film and television soundtracks, frequently recording on the 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros recording stages.

Students Create Branding for SF Fire Department's 150th Anniversary

The Academy's School of Graphic Design will be used by the San Francisco Fire Department to recognize its 150th anniversary. Deliverables included marketing materials, website templates, branding guidelines, promotional materials, commemorative items and merchandise, all designed by a Graphic Design graduate.
