Director of Fashion
The fashion design emphasis focuses on the creation of clothing including ready-to-wear, womenswear, menswear and costume design. Students are encouraged to develop their personal vision and design philosophy while deepening their understanding of the various international market segments.
Fashion Journalism encompasses every aspect of fashion media, from traditional print platforms to the growing world of online journalism and social media. Graduates of the Fashion Journalism program will be fully trained to report, write and edit fashion editorial pieces for magazines, newspapers, websites, in house retail fashion sites and public relations outlets.
The knitwear design emphasis focuses on providing students with the skills and construction techniques to produce high quality knitwear designs. Students will learn to design and produce swatches, garments, and full knitwear collections. They will establish a strong personal knitwear design philosophy through using visual research, and exploring design development processes.
The fashion merchandising emphasis focuses on all functions necessary to run a successful operation that develops, promotes and sells fashion products. Students develop the techniques and unique personal style necessary for a successful career in Merchandising.
Fashion Styling is creating fashion imagery that delivers the message of the designer or brand. Fashion Styling students at Academy of Art University will develop a styling portfolio and gain hands-on experience developing concepts and assembling compelling outfits for photo shoots. Fashion culture, working with models, photographers and make-up artists are emphasized throughout the program. Graduates of the program will be fully trained to style, produce and art direct for print or online fashion magazines, ad campaigns, commercials, catalogs, designers’ look books, fashion shows, fashion videos and personal clients.
The textile design emphasis focuses on printed surface design, drawing, mark making, color, design and industry standards.
The visual merchandising emphasis focuses on the physical method of promoting product and services to the customer for the purpose of increasing sales. Visual merchandisers actively engage in developing floor plans, window displays, in-store presentations, store lighting and graphics. Visual merchandisers work collaboratively with retailers to ensure that retail space is best utilized to maximize sales.
As a technical designer of knitwear, you’ll contribute to the technical design process from development to commercialization. Work closely with designers to maintain fit, silhouette, and design to preserve fit specifications and brand aesthetic.
Oversee trends, color, and fabric direction for upcoming seasons across all product lines as a design director for a fashion label. Manage design teams, oversee manufacturing and marketing, and set the direction for a brand voice to create the future of fashion.
Research, draw, and design prints for seasonal fashion with both hand drawing and computer skills as a textile designer. Create and inspire the next wave of textiles including engineered and repeat pattern prints.
As a fashion director, you’ll navigate between market trends, marketing and branding, and the retail experience for a fashion brand. You’ll craft a strategy, attend seasonal shows in New York, Paris, Milan, and London, and guide the company to profitability and improved brand equity.
As a visual merchandising director, you’ll help promote the image, products, and services of retail and wholesale businesses. You’ll create eye-catching displays using visual and graphic elements, and organize brand-related special events.
Supervise the process of creating, developing, and presenting content for a fashion magazine as a fashion editor. You’ll supervise teams, conceptualize and style photo shoots, curate photography, research industry trends, and choose items for publication in this fast-paced and exciting career.
Responsible for overseeing, planning, and directing all editorial content, the executive editor is the voice of any fashion publication. You’ll develop budgets, manage staff and contractors, oversee quality control, and innovate in the print and digital spaces in this fast-paced industry.
Turn a designer’s vision into a finished garment as a patternmaker. You’ll break down garment designs into workable patterns, transfer them onto fabric, and create the design blueprints for manufacturing.
As a fashion stylist, you’ll provide on-set art direction for editorial and catalog fashion shoots and support merchandising strategy with brand and theme-based shoots.
