Juan De Dios Garza Vela

Juan de Dios was born in Monterrey, Mexico and started drawing energetically at an early age, until the age of 13 when he grabbed a brush and canvas, eventually choosing to pursue the arts. Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende, Puebla and Mexico City were some of his early creative locations, but in search for a more rigorous training, he finally chose Academy of Art University in San Francisco as the place he would hone his skills. The city and its inhabitants quickly caused an impression. After experimenting with traditional painting and other mediums, he soon became inclined to work with mixed media. His work emphasizes time and space as things that are constantly changing us, we are constantly being destroyed and pieced back together by events and moments in our lives. Ultimately, these form who we are. His latest show “Mexico: Fragmented” dealt with the question: What does it mean to be Mexican? By deconstructing popular Mexican icons he explored the attachment of society to these in order to find an identity. While this identity question seems at first only for Latinos, it can be addressed by any nationality. Dios currently lives and works in Mexico.
