Each year at Academy of Art University’s Spring Show, students showcase their most innovative work and get the opportunity to meet with professionals in their industry, hoping to land their dream job. For Illustration student Neiko Ng, Spring Show presented the opportunity to intern with greeting card company American Greetings.

The creative recruiter who attended the show saw Neiko’s work and offered her the internship. In addition, three Graphic Design students were offered jobs with American Greetings on the spot.

As part of her internship, Neiko worked on a variety of projects and participated in digital and traditional drawing workshops each week. “I was able to work on their seasonal projects and also their production cards,” she said. “And I cannot wait to see the cards I helped work on appear in the open market.”

Through the internship, Neiko felt like she learned both about the company and about how to enhance her own illustration techniques based on the help of her coworkers. “I made a lot of amazing friends with unique skill sets of their own, and they taught me how to improve my work as well,” she said.

During her time at the Academy, Neiko has been named a finalist in the Society of Illustrators’ Zankel Scholar Award as well as working on a freelance project illustrating two children’s books, The Breakfast Bunch and Laurence’s New Haircut.

She credits Director of BFA Illustration Charles Pyle and instructors Thomas Gronbukt, Joko Budiono and David Ball with being the most influential instructors she has had at the Academy. “A million thanks to all of them,” said Neiko. “Without their encouragements, my skills wouldn’t be where they are today.”

Neiko plans to graduate this coming Spring semester. Her goal after graduation is to work in the animation industry and continue to freelance in the illustration field. “All the classes that I have taken and am taking at the Academy have assisted me in being prepared for my future,” she said.

Her passion for her art and design shows clearly in her advice for fellow students: “Draw and practice as much as you can. There are no short cuts for getting to the top. None.”
