Academy of Art University School of Fashion Graduation Fashion Show Returns In-Person Thursday, May 12

Renowned Designer Giles Deacon to receive honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

Fashion show will include senior thesis looks from current undergraduate and recent graduate collections.

(Wednesday, April 13, 2022 – San Francisco, CA) Academy of Art University School of Fashion is pleased to return to in-person to its end of year fashion graduate show and ceremony after two years in hiatus because of the COVID pandemic. The Graduation Fashion Show will be at 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 12th at St. Brigid Church (2151 Van Ness Ave). 

School of Fashion Executive Director, Simon Ungless, will direct current and recent BFA and MFA graduates’ works on a diverse cast of models.  Academy of Art University President, Elise Stephens, will present internationally renowned designer, Giles Deacon, with an honorary doctorate, a Doctor of Humane Letters, for Mr. Deacon’s remarkable fashion achievements. 

“The Spring Fashion Show is Academy of Art University. It’s more than just a showcase of our students’ journey through their craft: It’s a glimpse of the next generation of fashion, art, and design.  And to be back in-person after COVID lockdowns makes this year’s show an event not to be missed.”

Ungless, along with his School of Fashion faculty, worked closely with students, some in person and others online still due to remaining of COVID protocols, to create a Fashion Week style runway show.  The Graduates Show will feature collections in womenswear, menswear and knitwear. Special consideration has been given to several students who gradated during COVID lockdown and were unable to present to the public and peers.

The honorary doctorate will be presented to Giles Deacon for his much lauded and praised fashion career.  Deacon is a graduate of Central St. Martin’s and has a very distinguished career, having presented is collections around the world with loyal clients and specialty and department stores.  Deacon’s couture quality garments are featured as part the permanent collections in leading museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute as well as being an accomplished stage costume designer for the likes of the New York City Ballet and others.

“Since graduating from Central St. Martins in 1992, I have navigated a multitude of practices within the fashion industry and for that work to be recognized with the Doctor of Humane Letters from the Academy of Art University is both exciting and humbling,” said Deacon.  “I look forward to the honoring and the Graduation Fashion Show in San Francisco immensely.” 

The full production fashion show within St. Brigid Church will feature a special choral performance to accompany the models on the runway.

The event is closed to the general public, but will be available to view on a livestream.

ABOUT GILES DEACON

Giles is a London based couture designer and illustrator mixing fashion, fine art, theatre and grand scale glamour, known for his expertly crafted pieces using bespoke designed fabrics and intricate embellishments. For his work Giles received “British Designer of the year 2007” award.

Giles is a graduate of Central St Martins School of art and is a visiting lecturer there and at the Royal College of Art since 2018.  His pieces are worn and collected the world over by private clients, red carpet celebrities and royalty with pieces in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York and the Museum of Fine Art Boston.
