Since 2005, Academy of Art University has premiered the collections of students and recent graduates during New York Fashion Week. This year, the Academy’s School of Fashion has chosen nine student designers to debut seven different thesis collections.

“We are committed to helping our students launch their careers,” says Dr. Elisa Stephens, president of the Academy. “Presenting their work to industry professionals is an incredible opportunity for student designers to debut their collections during New York Fashion Week.”

Cana Klebanoff
Cana Klebanoff, BFA Knitwear Design, was born in Queens, NY. Inspired by nature, the armor of Japanese samurai, and the architecture of castles, Klebanoff’s collection communicates a sense of comfort alongside pride and strength. Klebanoff interned for Joseph Domingo (2011-2014), participated in the menswear division of Joe’s Blackbook (2016), and was awarded the San Francisco-Paris Sister City Scholarship Exchange to study for a full academic year in Paris, France at Studio Berçot (2017-2018).
Carlos Rodriguez
Carlos Rodriguez, BFA Womenswear, was born in Mexico City, Mexico and grew up in Clarksburg, CA. He was invited to collaborate with Dina Marie Lam and create the embroidery details for her collection. Rodriguez uses a mixture of traditional hand and machine embroidery techniques to enhance the contemporary feel of the garments. Recently, Rodriguez interned at tech-fashion start-up Savitude.
Dina Marie Lam
Dina Marie Lam, MFA Fashion Design, was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Inspired by the complex emotions surrounding her aunt’s recent passing, Lam selected soft, luxurious materials to convey a feeling of warmth, comfort, and transition. She was also inspired by those who demand the best in fabric, function, and form—“the dope and opinionated girls.” Lam was named BCBG Max Azria Super Intern (2017) and selected for the CFDA Fashion Future Graduate Showcase (2017).
Joanna Jadallah
Joanna Jadallah, BFA Menswear Fashion Design, was born in Chicago and raised in Orange County CA. For this collection, Jadallah was inspired by the fortitude of her ancestors, who were born and raised in Palestine but forced to leave everything behind. This collection captures and relates the beauty of her culture as well as the story of her ancestors’ displacement.
Eden Slezin
Eden Slezin, MFA Fashion Design, was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Inspired by “his life and loves,” Slezin’s collection celebrates individuality and staying “a kid at heart.” This collection incorporates vintage military denim, schoolboy uniforms, and sustainable materials including organic twill, recycled cotton, and natural dyed denim. A finalist in the Old Navy Design competition (2016) and the CFDA Elaine Gold Launch Pad (2017), Slezin was also selected for the CFDA Fashion Future Graduate Showcase (2017).
Hailun Zhou
Hailun Zhou, MFA Fashion Design, was born and raised in Qing Dao, China. For this collection, Zhou drew inspiration from observations and personal photographs taken for a creative concept class. Her collection features materials such as vinyl, PVC, and fabrics she created by fusing different materials together. Zhou was selected for the CFDA Fashion Future Graduate Showcase (2017).
Jelly Shan
Jelly Shan, MFA Fashion Design, was born and raised in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Shan’s collection channels a sense of peace and joy inspired by the temples, clothing, and prayer rituals of northwestern China. Shan manipulated the original colors of her materials to create a new color palette for her collection and describes her designs as “girly, edgy, and fresh.” She previously interned at SHUSHU/TONG and Max Studio.
Saya Shen
Saya Shen, MFA Fashion Design, was born and raised in Beijing, China. For her debut collection, Shen combined digital prints of dreamy, grayscale landscapes with fluffy, voluminous garments and oversized silhouettes. Shen’s collection draws inspiration from the many landscapes she has photographed—specifically the snowy forms of Hokkaido and the topography of San Francisco—and beckons the audience to escape into nature’s most surreal scenes.
Ryan Yu
Ryan Yu, MFA Fashion Design, was born and raised in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. For his collection, Yu was inspired by light and how light leads us out of the darkness. He focuses on the construction of his garments, as he believes it is the foundation of fashion. His collection uses the bold contrast of black and white in patent leather, jersey, and wool to construct futuristic forms.
