School of Fine Art

Degree Breakdown


The Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) Degree

Students enrolled in the BFA Program will complete 132 units, consisting of four sections:

Undergraduate Program Learning Outcome

Major Courses 78 units
Art Electives 9 units
Liberal Arts Courses 45 units
TOTAL 132 units

Students must earn a total of 132 semester units with an overall cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0 in order to receive their degree. A minimum of 12 units must be taken in Art History. A Petition to Graduate form must be filed by students with the Student Services Office prior to their last semester if they are to be eligible for graduation at the end of that semester. Students should contact their Student Advisor for detailed information regarding the petition period and deadlines.

The Master of Fine Art (MFA) Degree

The Master of Fine Art is comprised of the following components:

Graduate Program Learning Outcome

Studio Courses 27 units
Directed Study 18 units
Academic Study 12 units
Electives 6 units
TOTAL 63 units

Students enrolled in the Master of Fine Art program will earn a total of 63 semester units of graduate course work with an overall cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0 in order to receive their degree. Students are also required to have a final review. A Petition to Graduate form will be filed by students prior to their last semester if they are to be eligible for graduation at the end of that semester. Students should contact their Student Advisor for detailed information regarding the petition period and deadlines.

The Certificate Program

Students enrolled in the Certificate Program will complete 120 units, consisting of five sections:

Major Courses 78 units
Art Electives 12 units
Art History 6 units
By Advisement 24 units
TOTAL 120 units

Students must earn a total of 120 semester units with an overall cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.0 in order to receive their certificate. A Petition to Graduate form must be filed by students with the Student Services Office prior to their last semester if they are to be eligible for graduation at the end of that semester. Students should contact their Student Advisor for detailed information regarding the petition period and deadlines.

The Associate of Arts Degree (AA) Program

Students are required to satisfy the following requirements to receive an AA degree:

Major Courses 48 units *
Liberal Arts 18 units *
TOTAL 66 units
* Refer to each major for clarification
A minimum of 6 units must be taken in Art History.
