Oakland is the inspiration for a new series of letterpress prints issued by The Weekend Press, operated by Peter Pham and Jenny Pan—both Academy of Art University graduates—who are also directing the project. Four more Academy alumni are among the 10 artists contributing designs.

“Oakland Illustrated” is a series of 10 evocative, limited-edition art prints created by Bay Area artists and lovingly printed by Pham at The Weekend Press in Oakland, Calif. In addition to Peter Pham (BFA 2012) and Jenny Pan (MFA 2011), the four contributing artists and fellow Academy alums are Carl Bender (MFA 2009), Eszter Clark (BFA 2003), Javier Garcia (BFA 2005) and Richard Perez (BFA 2008). All six graduated from the Academy’s School of Graphic Design.

This is the first major letterpress collaboration for The Weekend Press, which was just established in the summer of 2013. Oakland Illustrated has steadily built an audience of supporters via social media—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Kickstarter.

“It’s been an organic approach, tapping into our network in the design community and almost all word-of-mouth promotion,” notes Pham.

Pham found his way back to letterpress printing after working at agencies like MetaDesign. He first fell in love with the craft while taking an elective course in printmaking at the Academy. While studying in the School of Graphic Design, he apprenticed for three years at Painted Tongue Press in Oakland, refining his skills.

The Weekend Press has made it possible for Pham and Pan to return to the tactility and craft of working with paper and ink. The new enterprise they’ve launched in Oakland was spurred by a desire to reconnect with the hands-on component of design. Via the press, the partners can combine their experience in design and production with their passion for printing.

Equipped with a Heidelberg 10×15 “windmill” letterpress from 1978, and a Kluge hot foil platen letterpress from the 1960s, The Weekend Press specializes in letterpress printing, foil stamping, die cutting and finishing.

The partners say additional contributions to their already-successful Kickstarter campaign will allow them to order bulk supplies, so they can reduce prices, and help them invest in a platemaker. And for supporting Oakland Illustrated, you’ll not only help them achieve these objectives, you can get some great art prints and other design-forward swag.
