What Sets Us Apart

View by:

  • Our curriculum moves beyond training for traditional jobs in broadcasting to drive students toward a world of online digital content. Tomorrow’s media technology is here, at the University
  • What distinguishes the Academy COM program from others is the hands-on approach, where skills are learned by doing. We teach the entire spectrum of communications, from social media to mobile video, virtual reality and drone photography and production. Students produce content such as their own video series, music videos and podcasts
  • There is a dual emphasis on interpersonal and mass communication – for example, students are taught the effects of news (fake and real) as well as how to produce credible and legitimate content. The school focuses on skills that are immediately employable, with a hands-on approach- everything learned through execution

  • Student resume reels are crafted to reflect the needs of the modern media industry. The expectations are high: resume reels must have clear, well-crafted stories that are professionally and technically executed. For those who appear on camera and microphone, employers value polished presentation skills, clear and concise writing, and a combination of personal and professional style

  • Our faculty’s vast industry connections will benefit you for career tracking and internship opportunities
  • You can rub elbows with media’s “Who’s Who” in a neighborhood with hundreds of the biggest media startups and broadcasters, including GoPro, LinkedIn, Comcast, Twitter, and NBC Sports
  • Help produce programming for our live Urban Nights radio station, with over 200K unique listeners per month
  • Students also receive press passes to pursue outside projects and fieldwork
  • Students get the opportunities to create live entertainment programs, develop reality and competition shows with guidance from Los Angeles-based production companies
  • Our graduates are being hired in some of today’s most alluring roles: As Salesforce TV producers, Airbnb video editors and content managers at both Yelp and Pixel
  • Many are managing the social media production for corporations large and small

  • You will learn from industry professionals with years of combined experience in the media marketplace. They will be your instructors, job coaches, and mentors
  • Instructors are working media professionals with colleagues across the entire spectrum of digital communications, from dot com startups to cable networks

Diverse and Unique, Cutting-Edge Classes

New Drone Production Class

The drone industry has taken flight, introducing a new form of media production that pushes the boundaries of photography, journalism, and cinematography. Drone production classes give students the opportunity to be part of this exciting shift in communications. You’ll gain hands-on experience with remote-controlled aircraft and create exciting aerial footage with an emphasis on creative storytelling. Students who complete the class will be fully qualified for employment as cinematographers and aero-journalists and prepared for federal certification.

Virtual Reality

Students in introductory virtual classes in the School of Communications & Media Technologies will learn how to use the latest VR video production equipment and post-production software to create immersive 360-degree experiences. Advanced classes provide further training in the latest immersive storytelling techniques. You will shoot with a variety of high quality VR/360 camera rigs, learn how to manually stitch and stabilize video using professional stitching software, and practice advanced editing with Adobe Premiere.
