Military & Veterans Education

We welcome veterans, those on active or reserve duty, and their families. At the Academy, we believe artists and soldiers share the same traits, passion, dedication, discipline, and vision. Our “No Barriers” admission policy opens the doors to all who believe in their artistic potential, regardless of their prior artistic experience.

As a member of the military and veteran community, you have needs that go beyond education; the Academy offers substantial resources to meet those needs. We have dedicated advisors for our military students who can answer all of your questions about finances, life at the Academy, and our educational offerings. “I love so many things about the Academy. The first thing I love is that there are so many different departments that can come together to co-create things. On Thursdays, I go up to New Montgomery, where they have a space for veterans. You can print your homework out if you need to. They have pool tables. They have a lounge area with TV. Sometimes I go there to do my homework. It’s good to be around people who know you.”

Veterans Resource Center

Academy of Art University recognizes the noble men and women who serve our country. That is why to serve them back in return, we provide opportunities for them to pursue creative entrepreneurship outside of the military that will benefit them and their families. The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) is just one of the ways the Academy provides support for our military students. In here, they can enjoy a welcoming space that feels like a home away from home, while at the same time being in a community of individuals who share the same background.

The VRC is located at 79 New Montgomery St., Room 316, San Francisco, CA 94105 with the following hours of operation (Pacific Time):

  • Monday through Friday 9:00am-6:00pm

Contact the VRC team directly by email at VRC@academyart.edu.

“The Veterans Resource Center at 79 New Montgomery is a great place to get all the veterans together and find a little place for them to have fun and do their homework, and at the same time get all the support they need…The main thing I like about the Academy is the teachers. The teachers will help you no matter what.”

– Jeffrey Geronimo, MFA Fine Art, Navy

“I am really enjoying the Game Design Track. I came to the Academy without any portfolio at all—the skills I am learning are invaluable.

– Ryan Smith, MFA Fine Art, Navy

“I got out of the Navy and was researching photography programs; the Academy came up as one of the top graduate programs. At the time, I wasn’t able to physically be in San Francisco, and I was really excited because I could study online at the Academy. The course material was unbelievable; it was so detailed and it gave me so much perspective.”

– Nate Hay, BA Photography, Navy
