Painting Facilities

The Fine Art Painting department is located south of market at 60 Federal, a few blocks from AT&T ballpark. It is made up of two and a half floors of classroom and studio space (about 25,000 square feet). Our facilities include twelve classrooms, two of which are full-time anatomy studios, and a full-time multimedia room with theatre seating.

Our teaching philosophy and approach is that of time-tested fundamentals and technical skills. This includes accuracy and sensitivity in drawing, design, value control, color concepts which, in turn leads to the development of ideas and personal direction. Our method of instruction is based up on three basic principles, lecture, demonstration and critique.

Classes include, still life paintings, composition, watercolor, landscape and cityscape, portrait, anatomy, as well as abstract and mixed media. Special topics such as surrealism, photo-realism, pastel, mural painting and portfolio development fine art business practices round out the rich curriculum. These give a great deal of breadth to their art education, but everything is structured upon a strong traditional grounding, which is constantly emphasized.

All classroom/studios are equipped with easels, tabarets, model stands, spotlights, cleaning stations and painting storage racks. There is a student art store within the building for all students and faculty to purchase any needed supplies at a discount.

A prop room on the second floor is well stocked with over 100 various fabrics and over 3500 different props for class and student usage. A large variety of models are employed for all figurative classes. Several free workshops are available each week for students to attend with instructions available, if needed.
