The Fashion Styling Degree

Fashion Styling is about creating outfits and fashion imagery based on a concept. Graduates will be fully trained to style, produce, and art direct for print and online fashion magazines, ad campaigns, commercials, e-commerce, look books, fashion shows, fashion videos, and personal clients.

From the first course, you will have the opportunity to work on photo shoots with models, photographers, makeup artists, and hair stylists. Your skills in personal and product styling will mature as you produce and art direct your own photo shoots. By senior year, you will have created an impressive styling portfolio that showcases your menswear and womenswear editorial photo shoots for various publications..

What We Teach

Product and Prop Styling
An interactive course that explores all the techniques of styling various fashion products with props and backgrounds. Product styling focuses on off-figure styling, a thriving and valuable skillset used for E-commerce and social media platforms such as Instagram.
Personal Styling
An intermediate course with a focus on styling for male and female clients based on lifestyle and wardrobe needs. Utilizing market research, students learn the ins and outs of building a personal styling business regarding full closet revamps, seasonal shopping, and outfitting.
Photo Shoot Production
An advanced course in learning the logistics and business aspects of being a freelance fashion stylist. Topics include; project management, collaboration, and self-promotion. Guest speakers, in-class activities, and course projects give insight into the various protocols behind producing a photo shoot.
Menswear Styling
An upper-level course that explores the discipline of styling menswear fashion editorials. Students will apply the techniques of creating successful tailored and casual looks for men while continuing to explore editorial styling and production processes.

A Beautiful Collaboration

180 Magazine is a collaborative effort created by students from Fashion Styling, Fashion Design, Fashion Journalism, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Architecture & Design, Jewelry & Metal Arts, and Photography. 180 Magazine provides a print and digital platform for Academy of Art students to communicate their creative experiences and creations. Both onsite and online students are given the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world context, publish their work, and build their portfolios while working closely with the industry they are preparing to enter.

The Styling Closet

As a student in the Fashion Styling program, you have access to over 2,500 garments, accessories, and props to style your projects and photoshoots. In addition to brands such as Chanel, Prada, Loewe, Céline, Dolce & Gabbana, Phillip Lim, Alice & Olivia, Isabel Marant and Derek Lam, Zara, H&M, and J.Crew, you can incorporate authentic, hand-picked, vintage pieces, including one-of-a-kind garments donated from the Academy’s MFA and BFA design collections.

Graduates from the Fashion Styling program at Academy of Art are trained to work as personal, product, commercial, and editorial stylists. They are experienced in photo shoot production, art direction, and are expert collaborators. Commercial Stylist
The commercial stylist styles outfits for e-commerce or advertising clients. Although less creative, it is also one of the most lucrative sector for fashion stylists.
Creative Director
The creative director is one of the most accomplished senior positions in the fashion industry. This profession requires vast experience in publication, production, art direction, styling, and a solid dose of business acumen to conceptualize and strategize the look of a brand or magazine.
Editorial Stylist/Fashion Editor
The editorial stylist or fashion editor supervises the process of creating, developing, and styling photo shoots for publications. It is the most creative discipline of fashion styling, as the editorial stylist can push the enveloped in terms of concept and clothing combination.
Fashion Show Stylist
The fashion show stylist’s goal is to present a collection in such a way that the brand receives the accolades it deserves. A stylist’s responsibilities in the fashion show can range from simply picking shoes the week before the show, to a month-long process working with the designer to building looks, casting, fittings, choosing makeup, hair styling, music set list, and even set design.
