Preparatory Coursework
Candidates for a Master's degree may be required to take preparatory coursework in order to meet our Graduate Admissions requirements. Department directors will assess candidates and recommend required coursework to meet our requirements and best prepare them for the Master's program.
  1. Must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent
  2. No more than six classes will be required
  3. Preparatory graduate coursework may not be transferred into the Master's programs
  4. Only students who plan to enter into the master's programs are eligible to take preparatory coursework
  5. All preparatory graduate coursework must be passed with a grade equivalent of "C" or higher before a student is fully accepted into the master's program; if a student does not pass a class, he/she must repeat the course and pass successfully before registering for graduate coursework
  6. Students will be charged the undergraduate tuition rate for preparatory graduate coursework
  7. Preparatory graduate coursework may not be taken concurrently with master's coursework
  8. English for Art (EAP) coursework will not apply toward preparatory graduate coursework

Portfolio/Demo reel

A portfolio with detailed descriptions in your chosen discipline is required for all international Graduate School applicants

 
Official bank letter
  • A letter or certificate from your bank in English showing at least U.S. $36,600.
  • Financial aid is not available for International students, and students should not depend on employment in the U.S. for financial support while attending AAU.
Additional documents
  • TOEFL OR IELTS CORE. You may submit your application for admissions before taking the test. More information available online: for TOEFL; for IELTS. Our institutional code for TOEFL is 4207; we do not require these scores and do not have a minimum score requirement. You will, however, be evaluated for your English language proficiency upon your arrival.
  • An art portfolio isn't required, but it will help your admissions process

Academy of Art University is also a member of the National Student Clearinghouse Electronic Transcript Exchange Registry and accepts transcripts from other member organizations.

 

Transfer Credit

We evaluate coursework from accredited colleges/universities that carry the same or similar credit system as Academy of Art University. Applicable transfer credits must be completed with an equivalent grade of “C” or above.

Evaluation

Transcripts should be sealed and mailed to Academy of Art University by the issuing institution. We must receive your transcripts by the end of your first semester at Academy of Art University.

 

Transcripts must be in English

Academy of Art University can only evaluate transcripts that have been translated and notarized in English.

 

Placement exams and waivers

Students can meet certain liberal arts requirements through placement exams and waiver options for Written Communication, Quantitative Literacy, Art History and Appreciation, Historical Awareness and Comparative Ideas & Influences.

Things you'll need for Pre-College admission:

To Apply

You must be in high school for the duration of the program. Current high school seniors graduating in 2014 will not be eligible for the Summer 2014 Pre-College Art Experience.

All classes are offered on a first come, first served basis. Early application is recommended.

A Non-refundable/Non-transferrable processing fee applies: Fall or Spring: $235.00 Students can take a maximum of two classes—one online and one on campus, or two online (All on campus classes run from 12:00pm-3:50pm, Saturdays) Summer: $525.00

Students can take a maximum of four classes, either on campus or online

No application fee required

With gratitude and respect to the men and women in the military, if you are serving in the US Armed Forces, either active duty or as a reservist, your Academy of Art University application fee will be waived.

You must be active or reserve during the semester for which you are applying in order for the fee to be waived.

If you get called back to active duty during the middle of the semester or if you’re active now and you are re-deployed, you may be eligible for a full refund of your tuition and fees paid during the semester.

The Academy of Art University is VA approved.
