Track 1: for BFA in Art Education Graduates

The Art Education Master of Arts in Teaching program will prepare you for a career as a successful and innovative art teacher in classrooms K-12. This program is designed for BFA in Art Education recipients and meets both national and California art education standards, and includes one semester of student teaching in a public school classroom, mentored by a master teacher. Once you have completed all coursework and  student teaching requirements, and passed both cycles of California Teacher Performance Assessment testing, you will be recommended for a California K-12 art teaching credential. For your Capstone project, you will be encouraged to think like an advocate in order to create a dynamic arts advocacy video to educate the public about the importance of art education to a 21st century creative economy.

Teaching Diverse Audiences Major/3

Meet the diverse educational needs of art students by fortifying your curriculum with culture and by developing strategies to identify language needs and adapt your teaching to address them. Course content is supported by fieldwork observations and interviews.

Inclusive Education Major/3

Learn to tailor your teaching to support students across a broad spectrum of physical, sensory, psychosocial, and cognitive abilities. Course content includes an introduction to special education history, law, and policy, and is supported by fieldwork observations and interviews.

Examine and develop strategies to build students' literacy skills in the Art classroom using language acquisition theory, reading comprehension, and critical thinking.

Student Teaching Seminar Major/3

Move from theory to practice by synthesizing your learning into original lesson plans and engaging activities implemented during your student teaching practicum.

Conduct ongoing reflection on your student teaching experience by documenting your insights, ideas, and concerns, while being guided through preparations for the required CalTPA state assessments.

MAT ART EDUCATION DEGREE & CREDENTIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS – TRACK I

  • Successful completion of Final Capstone Project
  • Minimum grade of C in all required 24 units
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and the following Academic Study Requirement:
    1 Cross Cultural Understanding course

Applicants to the Master of Art in Teaching Program must submit the following: 

  1. APPLICATION: Complete the online application clearly indicating chosen major and degree. 
  2. OFFICIAL COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT(S): Transcripts must be official, issued by the attended institution and show completion of a regionally accredited undergraduate degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Academy of Art University accepts electronic submission of official and unofficial transcripts. Students sending an official or unofficial electronic transcript should have it directed to the following email address: transcripts@academyart.edu.  
     
  3. SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENCE:
  • Option 1: Completion of a subject matter program approved by the commission. 
  • Option 2: Official results of passing the California Subject Matter Examination Test (CSET) in Art.  You must pass both parts of the CSET in Art: Subtest 1 and Subtest 2. For more information, please go to: https://www.ctcexams.nesinc.com/   
  • Option 3: Successful completion of coursework at one or more regionally accredited institutions of higher education that addresses each of the domains of the subject matter requirements adopted by the commission in the content area of the credential pursuant to Section 44282, as verified by a Commission-approved program of professional preparation. 
  • Option 4: Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Art from a regionally accredited university. 
  • Option 5: Through a combination of the methods described in clauses (1), (2), and (3) in whole or in part, has met or exceeded each of the domains of the subject matter requirements adopted by the commission in the content area of the credential pursuant to Section 44282 for multiple and single subject credentials, or pursuant to Section 44265 for education specialist credentials.

4. CONSTITUTION REQUIREMENT: This requirement can be met either by passing a college or university examination or by successfully completing coursework. The course should be one in American Government or in U.S. History, which covers the period prior to 1865. The student must have received a passing grade (a D- or better). (All Academy of Art BFA students meet this requirement with their LA 270 US History class.) 

If you did not take a course in your undergraduate education, you can either take an accredited online Constitution exam, or a 1-unit online course from an accredited regionally university.

6. STATEMENT OF INTENT: See essay guidelines below. 

7. RESUME: Describe your educational background, work experience, and skill set. 

8. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Two letters of recommendation are required. Kindly request for your recommenders to speak on your experience with working in some capacity in an educational environment. Please email their letters directly to your admissions specialist. 

Students must also submit the following prior to Midpoint, if not met upon entry: 

  1. TB HEALTH CERTIFICATE CLEARANCE: Official results of the TB Health Certificate clearance. 
  2. CPR and FIRST AID WORKSHOP: Official documentation of the successful completion of an approved CPR and First Aid workshop/class. Please ensure the workshop or class is approved the California Emergency Medical and Safety Authority (EMSA). The EMSA workshop may be completed during your first semester within the program.

  • You will be prompted to provide descriptions for your submission pieces. If your portfolio contains collaborative projects, describe your role in detail. 
  • Website URLs will also be accepted but may not be the only submission. 

STATEMENT OF INTENT GUIDELINES: 
Submit a typed essay (1-3 pages double spaced) that describe the following:

  1. Your background and activities relevant to your desire to be an educator
  2. Your background, skills, and training in art and design 
  3. The aptitudes and skills you have which you feel will help you as an educator
  4. Your experiences working with individuals from diverse backgrounds that will assist you in the classroom
  5. What you believe you need to learn in the program to prepare you for teaching

PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES: 

  • Please submit no more than 8 artwork samples 
  • The portfolio should demonstrate: 
    • Drawing and Painting: 3-4 samples of drawing and painting art skills (i.e. figure, head drawings) or life drawings that show understanding of form, texture, and lighting through shading with value and/or color
    • Skills in other art genres: 3-4 samples that can include, but not limited to, Sculpture, Photography, Graphic Design, Printmaking, or other areas of art and design

NOTE: Demonstrating all the skills above can potentially place you into advanced level studio classes.

  • Optional: Lesson plans or other writing samples that demonstrate knowledge and experience in art education. 

PLEASE NOTE: For International Applicants, all copy and writing samples must be accompanied by an English translation.

  • Utilize developmentally appropriate instructional strategies and scaffolding to make subject matter comprehensible to students
  • Evaluate student learning using a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies

  • Develop various lesson and curriculum plans to meet the diverse needs of students including English Learners and students with IEPs, based on the California Visual Art Standards
  • Create and maintain a classroom environment with expectations that are conducive to learning

Professional Readiness

  • Create a professional portfolio of artwork and curriculum suitable for seeking employment as a credentialed art educator in the state of California
  • Inform current and future educational practice by demonstrating reflective teaching and application

Art Education Advocacy

  • Produce a comprehensive, evidence-supported, and compelling video presentation that advocates for an Art Education problem or topic and calls on viewers to take specific action
  • Identify and research an existing problem or topic related to Art Education, describing the relevant history, any associated harms, and potential impact
