The School of Advertising takes Academy of Art University’s “real-world” approach to education seriously. The school’s One Club initiative offers students an opportunity to work on real-world challenges, advised by advertising executives and instructors with extensive agency experience. Boot Camp, a competition organized by The One Club, is one way students learn to address actual client issues. Over four days in October, more than 50 Advertising students organized in 11 teams participated in the sixth annual Boot Camp competition. The students’ challenge was to create a values-based campaign for Blue Shield of California. Employees of Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners (BSSP), an agency for Blue Shield of California, offered guidance and judged student solutions.

It’s a sunny spring day. Jeff McLane, director of the Academy of Art University’s School of Landscape Architecture, walks ahead of a group of graduate and undergraduate students. They’re in the marshlands of Heron’s Head Park, on the edge of San Francisco’s Bayview district. It’s a perfect place to find inspiration for including environmental issues in their studies. Visiting sites like Heron’s Head gives students knowledge of development needs, native and invasive species, and much more. This will be invaluable when they put their landscape architecture degrees into practice.

Redemption is a new short film written and directed by Academy of Art University alumna Seora Hong (2017), which has been making rounds in the film fest circuit, and winning awards.

For his first solo show, Academy of Art University School of Fine Art student Chanoh Heo wanted to do something different. High End, Heo’s recent show at the Academy’s Atelier Gallery, presented 10 works in which allusions to famous sculptures burst with eye-catching shocks of color, childlike drawings and neon lighting.
