In 2019, Sullivan—who studied in the Academy of Art University’s School of Animation & Visual Effects—has been plenty creative. She’s been a storyboard artist at Pixar since 2011, with credits like Monsters University and Incredibles 2. Last February saw the release of Sullivan’s Kitbull, a short film in Pixar’s SparkShorts program. In April, Disney Publishing released Sullivan’s Mommy Sayang, a children’s book. It’s part of the Pixar Animation Studios Artist Showcase series.

It’s a sunny spring day. Jeff McLane, director of the Academy of Art University’s School of Landscape Architecture, walks ahead of a group of graduate and undergraduate students. They’re in the marshlands of Heron’s Head Park, on the edge of San Francisco’s Bayview district. It’s a perfect place to find inspiration for including environmental issues in their studies. Visiting sites like Heron’s Head gives students knowledge of development needs, native and invasive species, and much more. This will be invaluable when they put their landscape architecture degrees into practice.

Academy Artist-Athletes Pitch in With SF Firefighters for the Holidays

San Francisco’s firefighters and Academy of Art University have long had a close relationship—one that’s especially in evidence during the firefighters’ Toys For Tots drive. As part of the campus-wide “Week of Giving,” Academy students join in the holiday spirit to assist the firefighters. In 2016, Academy of Art University graduate Xavier Goins photographed a man named Hop Jeong. In a closeup of his hand, Jeong points to a map showing where he came from in southern China. Jeong was among the immigrants processed at the Angel Island Immigration Station. It was essentially the West Coast’s version of Ellis Island.
