Tamara Hubbard

Online Graduate Director
School of Photography

Tamara Hubbard is a fine art photographer, educator, curriculum author, and academic leader based in Northern California. She serves as Online Graduate Director for the School of Photography at Academy of Art University, where she leads the MA and MFA online curriculum, chairs MA and MFA thesis committees, and guides graduate students through the development of thesis-level bodies of work shaped by concept, research, technique, critique, and a distinct visual voice.

Tamara has been part of the Academy of Art University community since 2006 and has served in director-level roles within the School of Photography since 2010. Across nearly two decades of academic leadership, she has brought innovative academic vision and guidance to graduate curriculum, thesis review, faculty training and support, course design, and student experience. During the early years of accredited online learning, she worked with university leadership to help shape the standards, teaching methodologies, and course practices that advanced the Academy’s online art education model.

She has authored and taught original online photography courses in composition and design, photographic concepts, travel photography, portfolio development, and graduate-level visual language, and has developed and directed the School of Photography’s Florence, Italy study abroad curriculum in partnership with Santa Reparata International School of Art. Her teaching has reached students across the United States and around the world through the Academy’s online graduate photography program.

Tamara earned her MFA in Photography with top honors from Academy of Art University in 2007. Her photographic work has been published, exhibited internationally, and featured in museum and gallery programs. Working across fine art, travel, food, documentary, and abstract photographic practices, she is especially interested in perception, place, memory, visual structure, and the ways photography can reveal connections between interior experience and the external world.

Before joining Academy of Art University, Tamara worked in art education at College of the Redwoods and later with Pearson Education as a photography education consultant and content contributor. She contributes to the photographic community as an exhibition juror, portfolio reviewer, curator, mentor, and advocate for thoughtful photographic education.
